You just have to think that any author who purports to explain the foundations of universal laws and constants in a book with chapter titles such as “Much ado about nothing,” “Anarchy rules,” and “The heat of the moment” (hands up all who remember that 1982 hit song from the band Asia…) is either entirely barking mad or absolutely brilliant.
While some may let pass the 5th of July with little more than a shrug, those in the scientific “know” mark it with reverence as it was the day in 1687 that saw the publication of one of the most – perhaps even the most – important works on time, force, and motion ever written: Sir Isaac Newton’s “Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica” (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy).

I defy you to find more than a handful of people who can provide a clear and relatively easy-to-comprehend explanation of gravity and its effects. Not just the basic “Newton’s apple” material most of us learned in school, but the deeper, universe-spanning phenomena in which it plays a role.
