It so often happens this way – not more than half a week or so after a promising new book makes its appearance in my post box, Mark Avery has a review of it posted to his blog. Most recently, the book in question is Orchard: A Year in England’s Eden by Benedict Macdonald and Nicholas Gates, as published under the venerable William Collins imprint of HarperCollins UK.
Although he had a bit of artistic criticism to offer regarding the represented member of the Picidae depicted on the cover, Mark seems to have been very pleased overall, pronouncing the work “really rather good.” I’ll leave it to you to read his full review for yourself. As for myself, I’m very keen to begin my own reading of it, about which I’ll certainly be reporting back once I completed my own stroll through it.
Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
