Well, the folks at AT&T weren’t exactly disclosive of all the difficulties of using MMS messaging while in Panama. I have deactivated the data service of my BlackBerry for the next week while here to prevent the huge international charges on a per kilobyte transfer rate, but I was assured that SMS and MMS messages could still be sent because they were carried under the voice service package. Well, you haven’t seen any moblog posts in the past couple of days, now have you?

That said, am indeed here in Panama – in Guadalupe, Chiriqui to be precise. My travelling companions and I are spending the night at the Los Quetzales Eco Lodge (whose guest computer terminal I am using to make this post) after a day of birding in both Volcan Baru National Park and the Amistad International Friendship Park. Depite the incessant rain, we managed to tick off quite a few interesting bird species, including Silver-throated Tanager, Violet Saberwing, and Rufous-collared Sparrow. The coveted quetzal was briefly seen be a few in the party but not well and certainly not by all, myself included.

Tomorrow promises more birding – and likely more rain – in the highlands in search of some of the prized species to be found here before setting of for the city of David and our flight back to Panama City. As MMS-mediated moblog posts from the BlackBerry are out of the question, I hope to take advantage of our future lodgings’ guest Internet terminals and make a few more posts before journeying back to the U.S. next week.

Peace and good bird watching.
