One of the down-sides of travelling as much as I do is the inability to always eat in a way that is at the same time both healthful and emotionally satisfying. Most all cities and towns across America have at least one restaurant that can provide these twin requisites, however when one is only in the location for a few days, by the time such an eatery is discovered it is time to head for the airport to depart. Fortunately for me on this trip to Austin, thanks to the good baristas at the Starbucks near my hotel, I have been blessed with the discovery of the Magnolia Cafe on my very first day here.
Located on Congress Avenue just south of the downtown area, the Magnolia Cafe is both healthful for the body and emotionally satisfying for the spirit. The decor is best described as casual-festive-funky, the staff genuinely friendly, and the food… Oh the food! Green chili chicken enchiladas was my choice for the late lunch I ate upon my inaugural visit. Fresh, tasty, and quite compatible with the dietary needs of those who, such as myself, have reached time in life where the word “cardiology” suddenly has a personal meaning.
Now there are those who would congratulate me for this fortunate discovery then urge me on to one of the other fine restaurants in the greater Austin area. However in the choice of dining establishments discovered while travelling, I tend to follow the advice given in the tenth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew: “And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into a house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it.” Needless to say, I have found the Magnolia Cafe most certainly worthy.
