A new (to me) podcast was recently added to my regular listening rota: The HPS Podcast.
A production of the History and Philosophy of Science program at the University of Melbourne it is now in its fourth season of production. I have a fair bit of archival listening to do to catch up with all its episodes, however being curious to get a quick sense of what it is about I downloaded the most recent episode – at the time of this writing – in which Dr. Erika Milam, Charles C. and Emily R. Gillispie Professor in the History of Science at Princeton University presented her ideas about what she describes as “colloquial science.”
In the interview she sat with Samara Greenwood, Prof. Milam explained what led her to define colloquial science as she has done, as well as reflected upon her 2019 book Creatures of Cain: The Hunt for Human Nature in Cold War America, the work and legacy of Loren Eisley, and a number of other interesting related topics. It was a noteworthy discussion indeed, and one that you should keep your notebook ready-to-hand while you listen to it.
Having learned so many interesting and useful things from this episode, I am very much looking forward with great anticipation to working though previous episodes of the podcast (with my notebook and a freshly sharpened pencil at the ready, of course).
