As I have with so many British nature writers, I had the good fortune to be introduced to the writings of Nicola Chester through Melissa Harrison‘s exquisitely curated Seasons Quartet from Elliott & Thompson (I may have mentioned this series of books to you before…). More recently, I had the even greater joy of meeting her in person at the last BirdFair any of us have been able to attend. Therefore I was delighted when a copy of her forthcoming book On Gallows Down arrived on my desk this past week.
Of course, Mark Avery had already long since gotten his mustache-accented nose into its pages, read it thoroughly through, and was likely putting the finishing touches on his review of it around the same time as my copy was being placed in our post box. (Apparently, U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s plans to “improve” the U.S. Postal Service are already in place and doing what he intended.)
His review is now published as his first Sunday Book Review for this week, and he seems to have very much liked what he read. Pop over to his blog for his full review.
Links to Dr. Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are entirely his own.
