Since 2004, those who appreciate an eclectic approach – which may include as much information about how a species, genera, or even an entire family figures in art or cultural history as about its biology and life history – when learning about animals have long found both education and enjoyment in the Reaktion Books Animal series. To this fauna was added, in 2013, a corresponding flora with the introduction of the Botanical series. Most recently, The Sun came out with the expansion of the paradigm into the heavens with the Kosmos series.
To this last mentioned series, Stephen James O’Meara‘s Mars was added just this past October. Presenting the red planet in both fact as well as the many fictions in which it has been featured, and including some of the most up-to-date discoveries from the information collected by the NASA Curiosity rover, this forthcoming book should be of interest to both dedicated astronomers as well as the simply martially curious alike. And with all the new information that we are likely to be learning in the coming months as the result of the successful landing of the NASA Perseverence rover on the Martian surface, this book presents a superb opportunity to get-up-to-speed on what we have known and thought about Mars thus far so as to be best prepared for what we may one day soon discover.
