I’m beginning to suspect that Stephen Rutt dislikes book reviewers.
Not so very long ago, I opened a parcel from Elliott & Thompson that contained a lovely copy of Mr. Rutt’s new The Seafarers; a Journey Among Birds. An examination of the history and ecological significance of seabirds in Britain, as well as something of a love letter to them and the remote lives they lead, it looked very much like just the sort of book that I would fancy, thus I placed it in the TO BE READ SOONER stack (well… “stacks” if I’m honest).
Then, before I even had a chance to pick up and settle down with the first one, a second new book by Mr. Rutt arrived – Wintering; a Season with Geese. The story of the lives and habits of the five species of geese commonly found in the UK, it also looked very much like the same sort of book (that is, very enticing and agreeable) as the first. It joined its predecessor in the same stack.
Thus I am now faced with a dilemma; which one to read first?
With luck, Mr. Rutt will now take a nice long holiday and give me a chance to catch up with his work.
Oh, by the way, Elliott & Thompson, publishers of both these books, is in the middle of a stem to stern revision of their website, therefore the links above lead to the books’ respective listings on Blackwell’s website.
