You know the phrase. When you’ve been embarrassed and feel particularly vulnerable, or perhaps when the stresses of job, family life, or the world in general have simply become overwhelming and you just can’t cope any longer, from your lips, perhaps quietly, emerges “I just want to crawl in a hole and die.”

Martin, paleontologist, geologist, and one of the world’s most accomplished ichnologists, explains in his recently published book The Evolution Underground, Burrows, Bunkers, and the Marvelous Subterranean World Beneath our Feet, evolutionarily speaking, precisely the opposite appears to be true: you crawl in a hole and live.
