As this Monday is a bank holiday in the UK, it’s not particularly surprising that Mark Avery’s thoughts this weekend would be filled with ideas of holiday weekends past and holiday weekends to come.
And as holiday weekends go, I – for one, and I’m confident that Mark for another – would say that hopping about Europe each weekend for a year is a pretty appealing idea indeed! And if a guidebook is needed for inspiration, Mark seems to have found just the right one: James Lowen‘s 52 European Wildlife Weekends.
As Mark explains, “The individual accounts are well-written, seem to have most of the right type of advice and information and where I could check the details from personal experience it all seemed pretty much right.” But I have to disagree with Mark on one small point – yes, I would “go all that way” for an insect.
Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
