For his book review this week Mark has picked Laurence Rose‘s soon-to-be-published The Long Spring; Tracking the Arrival of Spring Through Europe from Bloomsbury Publishing.
Recording Rose’s adventures arising from his desire to explore “Europe’s remarkable heritage of exceptional places and the wildlife, traditions and people associated with them” he followed the arrival of Spring across the continent from it’s pre-arrival February beginnings in the north of Africa to its eventual appearance in the arctic.
Widely travelled conservation professional that he is, Mark has a personal knowledge of many of the locations Rose visited in his writing of this book, and it is on this aspect of it that he primarily focuses in his review.
Links to Mark Avery’s Sunday book reviews appear in The Well-read Naturalist by special arrangement. You can find all of Mark’s past reviews as well as a wide-ranging collection of his other writings on his Standing Up for Nature website. Mark’s opinions regarding the books he reviews are his own.
