How many species of freshwater fishes inhabit the rivers, lakes, and streams of Oregon? Interestingly enough, scientific opinions differ on this question. However whatever the actual number may be, Douglas F. Markle‘s new A Guide to Freshwater Fishes of Oregon contains images and aides to the identification of most of them.
Combining illustrations by renowned artist Joseph R. Tomelleri and the author’s own photographs, this new guidebook contains family overviews for all, as well identification keys for the more diverse, species included.
As a life-long resident of the state, I am particularly excited at the opportunity to spend a bit of time with this new guide in order to help fill in some of my admittedly incomplete knowledge of just what might be discovered swimming in my home state’s waters. Pike, for example; introduced, but still present.
