I was in my late thirties when I saw my first fireflies during a visit to the midwest. My companions, all very well acquainted with these crepuscular wonders, laughed heartily at both my initial shock and then rapt amazement at the other-worldly glow they produced as they hung in the warm evening air.
Now with the publication of Sara Lewis’ new book Silent Sparks; The Wondrous World of Fireflies from Princeton University Press, I can take comfort in knowing that I am not alone in my reaction to these amazing little insects, as from her recently delivered TED Talk, it is clear that even a seasoned biologist can become just as filled with amazement about them as I was.
