If you have a favorite member of the genus Capra, then José R. Castelló has most certainly got your goat in his forthcoming book Bovids of the World; Antelopes, Gazelles, Cattle, Goats, Sheep, and Relatives from Princeton University Press. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist – and I suspect neither could you given the chance.)
Not, of course, to in any way make light of this important new book. Detailing as it does all 279 described members of the Bovidae – the first field guide to do so – over its 664 pages and including 337 full-color plates and more than 1,500 photographs, Castelló’s book is quite an ambitious undertaking indeed, and one I’m very much looking forward to investigating in much greater depth.
(And I want credit for not saying that I’m planning to ruminate over its contents.)
