When Scribner first published Robert Michael Pyle’s Wintergreen; Rambles in a Ravaged Land in 1986, many of its initial readers found it to be a very well-written, meditative, and thought-provoking book. Did many of these same readers expect that it would become modern natural history classic? Perhaps – and for those who did, they were absolutely correct.
Now approaching its thirtieth anniversary, Wintergreen is widely considered to be one of Pyle’s best works. So much so that Pharos Editions has recently republished it in a special anniversary edition with a new introduction written by David Guterson and an updated afterword penned by Pyle himself.
For those who have previously read Wintergreen, the publication of this new edition is an excellent reason to revisit it. And for those who have not yet read it, I heartily encourage that the anniversary of this important book’s initial publication be observed by doing so.
