As this week seems to be shaping up to be one devoted to new field guides, it’s well worth noting that in May of this year, Johns Hopkins University Press will be publishing Leslie Day’s new Field Guide to the Neighborhood Birds of New York City.
Those familiar with Dr. Day will no doubt recall her previous urban field guides: Field Guide to the Natural World of New York City and Field Guide to the Street Trees of New York City. Indeed, given her long and distinguished career as an environmental and life science educator, it is difficult to imagine anyone more perfectly suited to the writing of this forthcoming book.
While I regret that I will not be able to put the Field Guide to the Neighborhood Birds of New York City through its paces in New York City, I will do my utmost to give it as thorough an examination and assessment as I am able.
Interestingly, and much to my delight as one who – when given the choice – favors hardback books over paperbacks, Dr. Day’s new field guide will be offered in not only the expected paperback but a hardback edition as well.
