When I make my journey with Gunnar Engblom and Kolibri Expeditions to the Manu lowlands of Peru this July, one thing is for certain: I will need to be preparred with a plan of defense to counter the appetite-driven attacks of the many members of the Class Insecta that I will encounter there. Which is why I was so pleased to discover the recent episode of the Bug Bytes podcast that addressed the efficacies of the different types of insect repellent.
As one who has a history of a. being appetizing to blood-meal craving insects, and b. reacting poorly to DEET-based insect repellents, I was overjoyed to learn of alternatives to this tried-and-true chemical compound that are known to have a comparable level of effective repelling capabilities. What’s more, I also learned from Bug Bytes of research that is presently underway to discover how to harness the natural insect repellence possessed by some (lucky) individuals.
For anyone hoping to enjoy themselves in an environment that is rich in insect diversity, a successful method of keeping the nasties at bay is essential; therefore I shall be forever in the debt of the good people at Bug Bytes if what I learned from their podcast proves effective in keeping me comfortably bite-free and thus better able to enjoy all the Peruvian wonders Kolibri’s guides help me to discover during my visit to Peru.
