The Rufous Hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus) are back in the Pacific Northwest. The list servers are beginning to light up with reports of “first of the season” sightings. At our own feeders, the first one was noted almost two weeks ago.

Naturally, being interested in all aspects of bird study, I wanted to get a few images captured to add to my ever-growing collection of bird photographs. Thanks to my handy Wingscapes BirdCam, I have been able not only to capture still images but quite a few video clips as well.

First, the still image captured by the BirdCam (every video captured is recorded with one still image of the scene):

As I was away attending a Cirque du Soleil performance (Corteo – go see it, it’s marvelous!) with my family when this was recorded, the time stamp is quite handy in improving my understanding of when our local hummingbirds are visiting the feeders.

Next, a close cropping of the same image above:

Finally, the video from which these images were captured:

Peace and good bird watching.
